Mandy joined UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) in January 2016 as their Senior Programme Manager. UKWIR was set up by the UK water industry in 1993 to provide a framework for the procurement of a common research programme for UK water operators on ‘one voice’ issues. UKWIR’s members comprise 20 water and sewerage undertakers in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Mandy’s role is to drive UKWIR’s research programme forward as well as providing support to UKWIR’s Project Managers and developing collaborative relationships with external organisations.
Microplastics is a current research focus topic for the water industry as they seek to clarify what role they can play/ are already playing in addressing the microplastics problem.

Matt is an environmental scientist with an expertise in freshwater pollution ecology. His work focusses particularly on the sources, treatment and fate of Priority Hazardous Substances, Priority Substances and Specific Pollutants entering wastewater treatment works. As a member of the Chemicals Investigation Programme steering group he is leading on scoping UK water industry research into microplastics in 2020-25. He is also on the UK Water Industry Research steering group for project EQ01A231 Sink to River – River to Tap. A review of potential risks from nanoparticles and microplastics.

Jenni joined Thames Water’s Graduate Programme in 2012 and has been part of the Environmental Regulation Team since 2014, project managing Thames Water’s contribution to CIP2 (Chemical Investigations Programme 2) and is on the steering group to scope CIP3, commencing in 2020, which will include microplastics research. Her main focus is delivery of CIP2 and identifying and investigating emerging environmental concerns surrounding waste water, currently including microplastics, plastics more generally and antimicrobial resistance. In 2017, Jenni took on a 12 month secondment to Defra’s water quality team, focussing on policy delivery and research of chemicals and AMR.
Jenni is Thames Water’s technical lead on plastics and microplastics and is driving development of the company’s policy and strategy on plastics. She is also forming relationships with other industries and regulators to tackle plastic pollution and to understand opportunities to minimise Thames Water’s impact on the environment from plastic. Jenni is the waste water facilitator for implementing the UKWIR project, Sink to River – River to Tap.
